Identity Defense produces two fraud scores for every inquiry: an ID theft score and synthetic fraud score.
What is identity theft? This occurs when someone illegally obtains and uses someone else's personal information to commit fraud or other crimes. Unlike synthetic fraud, this involves a real person whose identity is misused to access accounts, open credit lines or commit other crimes.
What is synthetic identity fraud? Fraudsters combine real and fake information to create an entirely fictitious identity that doesn't actually exist. This is different from identity theft in that the name, date of birth and social security number do not correspond to a real individual.
- First-party synthetic fraud involves a real person fabricating their social security number and sometimes other information, often to access credit and loan products
