Tokenized payments enhance security and improve the cardholder purchase experience through digital channels. It enables additional security by creating a token, a digital account number that acts as a substitute for a consumer's personal account number.
While just one element in a mobile payment security strategy, tokenization provides a secure method for third-party enablement of mobile wallets, utilizing near-field communication (NFC). It also reduces the risk of fraud in digital channels such as m-commerce and e-commerce.
Tokenization capabilities are required for cards to be used through the Apple Pay®, Google Pay™ and Samsung Pay services, which enable mobile payments at many physical and online merchants and service providers. In addition, tokenized payments complement EMV™, which has been successful at reducing fraud at the point-of-sale. Research has shown that, while EMV addresses security for card present transactions, it has the potential for fraud to shift to card-not-present, online and mobile channels. Offering both EMV and Tokenization enhances the overall payment eco-system data security.
As mobile payment technology becomes more accessible and convenient, consumer adoption will accelerate. Fiserv is equipping our clients to meet growing consumer demand for payments from their mobile devices, whether they are paying bills, paying other people or making purchases.
