What is the Digital Payments Maturity Index?

The Digital Payments Maturity Index from Fiserv is a validated benchmarking framework built from a survey of 381 U.S. banks and credit unions. It uses responses across 20 digital payments capabilities, applies timing weights for implementation status, and produces a normalized score (0–100) that maps to five maturity segments: Legacy Operators, Pragmatic Adopters, Progressive Movers, Trendsetters and Trailblazers.

The Digital Payments Maturity Index (DPMI) measures where banks and credit unions stand across 20 payments capabilities — from fundamentals, such as bill pay and account-to-account (A2A), to innovations like instant rails, API integrations and stablecoin.

Digital Payments Maturity Index FAQs

  • The DPMI is a research-based benchmarking framework that measures a financial institution’s digital payments capabilities across 20 prioritized areas — from bill-pay and A2A to instant rails, APIs and fraud controls. It produces a normalized 0–100 score and groups institutions into five maturity tiers so leaders can compare performance and prioritize investments.

  • The study was conducted by Arizent. They surveyed 381 U.S. banks and credit unions (credit unions, community banks under $10B, and regional/super‑regional banks $10B+) in late 2025.

  • The score aggregates answers across 20 digital payments capabilities using timing weights for implementation status (currently offer, planned within 12 months, planned within 13–24 months, no plans). Scores are summed, normalized and scaled to a 0–100 range, then mapped to five maturity tiers.

  • The DPMI tiers are Legacy Operators, Pragmatic Adopters, Progressive Movers, Trendsetters and Trailblazers. Each tier reflects increasing breadth and depth of payments capabilities — from basic functionality to API-driven integrations, instant rails and embedded finance.

  • The DPMI Calculator is a 5–10 minute questionnaire that evaluates your institution across prioritized payments capabilities. Each capability carries a timing weight based on whether it’s currently offered, planned within 12 months, planned within 13–24 months, or has no plans. The calculator converts your answers into a 0–100 DPM score, places you in one of five maturity segments, and delivers a tailored, prioritized roadmap and benchmarking versus peers.
